I’m fourteen years old and a girl. I have a lot of problems with my teeth, although there is no plaque on the front of my teeth, they still don’t seem to be getting any whiter even though I brush with whitening toothpaste regularly and floss/mouthwash as well. However, my teeth do seem to have a lot of hard plaque around the back of my teeth, which the dentist pointed out last time I visited. I now brush around the backs of my teeth more and floss more thoroughly there, but the plaque still seems to stay. I’m embarrassed to go to the dentist because of the state of my teeth, so wondering if anyone could recommend any other ways of removing plaque/whitening teeth? Also, I have two fillings, one on an upper left tooth, and the other lower right. The lower right is where I’m having problems, because it seems as though half of my lower right tooth has chipped away, exposing the filling, and quite possibly the nerve or something. I can’t eat on that side, especially anything sweet or especially hot or cold, because I get a sharp stabbing pain throughout the tooth. This also happens whenever I apply any pressure to the tooth with my tongue. Whenever I do manage to chew with the right side of my mouth, I get a bad taste, kind of bitter coming from the offending tooth. It’s really worrying me because I’m afraid that the entire tooth will have to be removed. I need to know if anybody has any suggestions as to what I can do to help improve the state of my teeth, and if anyone else has any experience with any of the same problems what they did to try and alleviate or fix it.
I’m afraid to say it but I recommend you visit your dentist, they aren’t there to judge you on your brushing and will recognize you have made an improvement attempting to floss and brush all surfaces! Patients like you are the best to treat as you have real motivation! the hard plaque is known as calculus and can only really be mechanically removed through scaling with a hand scaler or an ultra-sonic scaler. the tooth that has cracked a little probably needs the filling replaced. there maybe some caries/decay under the filling or it might be leaking causing the sensitivity so its best to have it removed, it might just need another filling but the longer its left and the deeper it may be the more risk it will go into the nerve, so its best to get it seen asap! if the tooth keeps you awake and just sporadically hurts without a trigger then it maybe into the nerve, if its only triggered then its more likely to only need a new filling good luck! I have that same thing on my teeth and my dentist recommended that I get a root scaling and planing procedure done to get rid of it. Here is a little more info on what it is: Scaling and root planing is the most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal disease. Scaling is the removal of calculus and plaque that attach to the tooth surfaces. The process especially targets the area below the gum line, along the root. Plaque is more likely to stick to rough surfaces. For this reason, the root surface is smoothed down in a process called root planing. Root planing removes any remaining calculus and smooths irregular areas of the root surface. Plaque is a sticky substance, full of bacteria, that forms on teeth. When plaque hardens over time, it is called calculus.
