Which toothpaste do you think is better?

I have been using Colgate Total for a long long time. When I got married my husband changed from Crest to Colgate Total also. Now he has a cavity and he is blaming it on the Colgate Total. He also uses Listerine. I told him that his Listerine is made by the same people that make Colgate Total. I told him that it isn’t the toothpaste it is the length of time he brushes his teethe. Am I right? Or have other people have had problems with Colgate Total.

The cavity has nothing to do with the total because it also has the same amount of fluoride in it as crest (which is what prevents cavities). He needs to brush 2 or more times a day after meals and floss daily. He also needs to brush for 2 minutes gently every time. Ask him if he eats candy such as mints. Many adults do not realize mints are candy! And chew them and eat them all day long. If he eats mints or gum that is not sugar free than that could be why he has a cavity. Note that Listerine is made by Johnson and Johnson while Colgate is made by the Colgate-Palmolive company. Colgate Total contains triclosan, sodium saccharin, small amounts of sodium hydroxide and hydrated silica. See if your husband has problems with those ingredients. It could just be that he ate too much sugary foods. You did not mention where the cavity was. If the cavity was in between teeth. That is a very hard place to clean especially with a normal toothbrush. That is why they recommend to floss. Dentists also recommend regular intervals of teeth cleaning with at least once every 6 months. Some people with more problems with plaque built up go more often. Have a dentist check the cavity first. You’re only supposed to brush your teeth for two minutes, two times a day. It’s nothing to do with Colgate Total. I’d recommend some toothpaste that helps strengthen the enamel and to use a soft tipped brush. I am a Colgate Total person also and I go to the dentist every six months.
